Arsenal close in on deal for William Carvalho
Arsenal appear to be in pole position to win the heated race to sign Portuguese midfield star William Carvalho.
Sporting Lisbon star Carvalho was a shining star of the European Under-21 championships over the last few weeks, with his performances heightening speculation that he would make a big money move to England.
Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City are among the clubs that have been linked with Carvalho, but it seems as if Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is in pole position to sign the 23-year-old.
The latest reports from Portugal suggest a deal for Carvalho to move to Arsenal could be edging closer, with the defensive midfielder bolstering a position that was perceived to be a weak spot in the Arsenal line-up.
Meanwhile, new Arsenal keeper Petr Cech has vowed to try and play at the top level of the game for another seven years, as he believes he can continue playing until he is 40.
"I don't want to speak about retirement for another seven years," the 33-year-old told the Evening Standard.
"That's my target and then I will see. You can have a plan, but sometimes, it doesn't turn out the way you want.
"This move is one of those things I didn't expect, but I'm glad it happened. In football you never know what's round the corner and retirement is something I don't plan.
"I'm just looking forward to my new challenge. I'll just go in, do my work and show I am worthy of a place."
