Arsenal bid for Shkodran Mustafi stalled over transfer fee - report
Arsenal's hopes of ending their early season defensive crisis appear to have hit a stumbling block, amid reports that their bid for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi has stalled.
The Daily Mirror are among those reporting that the Gunners will not pay the £25m asking price for Mustafi, with Valencia keen to hang on to their German defender unless they collect the full amount.
The reports claim Arsenal will only pay around £20m for the defender, with the story certain to inflame already angry Arsenal fans who are smarting from Sunday's 4-3 defeat against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.
Wenger's reluctance to sign new players this summer has infuriated many Arsenal fans, with Mustafi viewed as a quick-fix solution following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel.
Yet Arsenal could head into Saturday's away game with Premier League champions Leicester fielding a defensive line-up that may include the inexperienced duo of Calum Chambers and Rob Holding unless Wenger seals a transfer by this coming Friday.
Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans has also been linked with a move to Arsenal, but West Bromwich Albion are keen to hang on to their experience central defender.
