Sir Alex Ferguson "ready to return" to Man Utd fold
Iconic Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson would consider a return to the first team fold if Louis van Gaal is sacked this season, according to a sensational report in the Sunday People.
The report suggests that Ferguson would be prepared to come out of retirement to act as a father figure for Ryan Giggs if he is handed control of the United first team until the end of the season.
While United fans have reservations over Giggs' suitability for the role, the presence of Ferguson as a silent sidekick may give him the credibility he needs to assume the position.
It is the first indication that Ferguson would be tempted to make a comeback of sorts and if the report is accurate, it would also provide tangible evidence that Van Gaal's position is under threat at Old Trafford.
Reports earlier in the week had suggested that Van Gaal could lose his job at United if they lose Sunday's game against Liverpool at Anfield, with club officials growing increasingly concerned over the negative vibe around the team in recent months.
Reports last month claiming sacked Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was being lined up to replace Van Gaal proved to be misguided, but there does appear to be something of a change of mood at United over their managerial position in recent days.
Van Gaal remains the favourite to be the next manager to face the axe in the Premier League, with all eyes now on his next big test against Liverpool on Sunday.
