Alex Ferguson has handed the new Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho a glowing endorsement and predicted he will inspire a “massive improvement” at the Old Trafford club.

Ferguson has previously revealed that he spoke to Mourinho as he prepared to bring down the curtain on his record breaking reign as United manager back in 2013, but any prospect of a move to install the Portuguese tactician as his successor three years ago was halted as he has already agreed to start a second spell in charge of Chelsea.

With Mourinho finally landing the job many believe he has always wanted at United, he will welcome this public backing from Ferguson, that was delivered at a Sky Sports event.

“I think there’ll be a massive improvement,” said Ferguson, as he was asked what kind of impact Mourinho will have at United. “Manchester United is the right kind of club for him.

“I think Jose was wrong to go back to Chelsea. It’s always difficult when you go back somewhere for a second time, but ability, charisma, personality….his record, you can’t ignore that.

“He’s won the European Cup twice with different clubs and won titles with all the clubs he’s been at. I think we will do well.”

Ferguson took a back seat role during the less than successful reigns of David Moyes and Louis van Gaal in the three years since his retirement, but his long-standing friendship with Mourinho should ensure the duo can have a more open relationship.

Mourinho has already spoken about the advice Ferguson has given him since his arrival at United, as he embraced the suggestion from the Scot that an umbrella may be the most important tool he will need to combat the Manchester weather.
