The talismanic Munster man appeared to injure his hamstring just before half time against France, probably ending his World Cup and possibly his wonderful Ireland career

In a brutally tough game, Ireland had already lost Johnny Sexton to injury midway through the first half when he took a huge hit from Louis Picamoles.

However, there was even more misery for Ireland to come as Paul O'Connell, playing his final World Cup for Ireland, went down after being involved at a breakdown just before half time against France.

The injury led to O'Connell being stretchered off and he received a standing ovation from the Irish fans in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.
