Joe Ward narrowly missed out on qualifying for the last Olympics and faces a tough challenge to get to Rio next year

Joe Ward’s Rio 2016 Olympic aspirations have suffered a major setback.

He now faces an uphill struggle to qualify for the Games after losing to French light-heavyweight Mathieu Bauderlique in AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) in Sofia, Bulgaria on Saturday night.

The Irish southpaw was stopped in the fourth round. The Moate man started well but his professional opponent took charge in the third round and had the Irishman in trouble in the fourth when the referee stepped in.

The defeat means that Ward - who was very unlucky not to qualify for the London Games - will have to through the hazardous conventional route now
if he is to make it to Rio.
