Mike McCarthy to replace injured Ireland legend Paul O'Connell
Leinster’s Mike McCarthy is set to replace injured Ireland legend Paul O’Connell.
According to reports in The42, the 33-year-old second-row has been notified of Joe Schmidt’s decision to add him to the squad after O’Connell’s hamstring ruled him out of the remainder of the Rugby World Cup.
The Ireland captain injured his right leg in the closing minutes of the first half during Ireland’s dramatic 24-9 victory over France.
Official confirmation that O’Connell will be ruled out of the tournament is expected today.
It is believed that the Munster man will undergo an operation on the hamstring later this week.
