Ciara Mageean has won a bronze medal for Ireland on the final day of the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam.

Despite not having a clear route to the line, Mageean produced a superb finish to battle her way to bronze in the Women's 1500m final in a time of 4:33:78.

Poland's Angelika Cichocka won gold in a time of 4:33:00 while the Netherlands' Sifan Hassan finished just two hundreths of a second ahead of Mageean in second place.

Coached by Jerry Kiernan, Mageean has had to overcome serious injuries in her career and was competing in her first major international competition as a senior athlete.

Speaking after the race, Mageean declared herself "ecstatic" but "slightly disappointed" at the same time.

"If I had a clean run at the home straight it could have been a different story," she said.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for the men's 4x400m relay team as they narrowly missed out on a place at the Olympics.

The team of Brian Gregan, Craig Lynch, David Gillick and Thomas Barr came home in fifth place in a season's best of 3:04:32, an agonising two tenths of a second outside the time they needed to qualify for Rio.
