Floyd Mayweather's showdown with Conor McGregor may be about to be confirmed at last, after the Nevada Athletic Commission's diary confirmed the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas has been booked for a boxing event on Saturday, August 26th.

After months of speculation, talks over a potential showdown between unbeaten boxing king Mayweather and Ireland's MMA star McGregor appeared to have hit a wall in recent weeks, as the two camps argued over a share of revenue from the super-fight.

Now it appears a date has been set aside for one of the most improbable sporting contests of recent times, with the Nevada Commission confirming they will sanction a professional boxing event hosted by Mayweather promotions in late August.

False rumours suggesting Mayweather v McGregor would be announced have surfaced on numerous occasions in recent months, but the Irishman appeared to hint a big announcement was on the way with his latest tweet (below).

High profile figures in the boxing community such as Oscar De La Hoya have also hinted that the clash with harm boxing's reputation as he described the prospect of two competitors from different sports facing off in a boxing ring as 'a farce'.

"With each passing day, it looks more and more likely that the circus known as Floyd Mayweather Vs. Conor McGregor will be coming to town in the near future," said De La Hoya.

"My interest is in the health of boxing as a whole. Our sport might not ever recover."

Yet multiple world boxing champion Roy Jones Jr is among those backing the crossover fight, as he believes the cash it would generate make sense for all involved.

“Floyd is in the business of knowing what people want to see and he gives them what they want to see,” Jones Jr. said.

“And they pay for it, because it’s what they want to see. So why would they not do that? It would be crazy not to do that.”
