WEXFORD 5-31 UCD 1-08

Wexford boss Davy Fitzgerald had the perfect start to his new job as his charges demolished UCD in the first round of the Walsh Cup tournament in Gorey.

Goals from Barry Carton and Paul Morris saw the home side 2-1 to 0-1 ahead after just five minutes and even though Darragh Dolan pulled a goal back for the understrength students, Wexford had wrapped up the contest by half time as they led 4-12 to 1-5.

The students could only manage a further three points in the second half while - much to the delight of the big Wexford crowd - their side notched up another 1-16 to run out facile winners on a 5-31 to 1-08 scoreline.

Fitzgerald, who previously managed Waterford and Clare, won’t need to be reminded that bigger challenges lie ahead in 2017.

Elsewhere, new Limerick hurling boss John Kiely received an early-season boost when his charges went on a second-half point-scoring rampage in Dungarvan against All-Ireland semi-finalists Waterford to record a comfortable seven-point win over the home side.

Shane Kingston, son of team manager Kieran Kingston, was one of the Cork newcomers to impress as the Rebels eventually ran out comfortably winners against Kerry in Mallow in the other Munster senior league tie.

There were no shock results on the opening day of the season although in the Walsh Cup Antrim’s away win over Westmeath and IT Carlow’s big win over Kildare were noteworthy.
