Superb win for Adam Nolan at European Boxing Championships

Wexford born Garda, Adam Nolan has pulled off a sensational win at the European boxing championships in Samokov, Bulgaria.

The London Olympian fashioned a unanimous 3-0 verdict over the highly rated Russian Radzhab Butaev, who was the number one seed in the welterweight division.

The Russian has already qualified for the Rio Olympics courtesy of winning his six fights in the World Series of Boxing this spring.

But southpaw Nolan, who is coached by club level by Katie Taylor’s father Pete, produced arguably the best performance of his career to win 29-28 on all three judges’ cards. 

Nolan is now through to the quarter finals and one win away from securing his first championship medal.

Later former European gold medallist Joe Ward demolished Georgian native Nikoloz Selchniashvil 30-25, 30-24, 30-24 to join Nolan, Conlan and Walsh in tomorrow quarter finals.

Apart from guaranteeing them a championship medal if any of the four boxers win their quarter final bout they are guaranteed a place at the World championship in Doha which is a qualifier for the Rio Olympics.
