Michael Conlan will headline New York card for pro debut
Olympic medallist Michael Conlan will make his pro debut on St Patrick's Day next year as the headline fighter on a Madison Square Garden card.
The bout at the famous New York venue is for many the pinnacle of their career so it is a remarkable start to the pro life of the former World Amateur champ.
No details on Conlan's opponent have yet been released but promoter Bob Arum is confident the fight will be a huge draw for Irish fight fans.
Speaking to RingTV, Arum said: "Thousands of people are going to be flying in from Ireland to New York to watch it.
“It’s going to be an unbelievable event. I think Michael is going to be a major star in the order of a Barry McGuigan"
The Belfast boxer was tipped for a gold medal at the Rio Olympics but was he was controversially defeated at the quarter-final stage following a judges decision, after which he unleashed a foul-mouthed tirade at the AIBA hierarchy.
