Thomas Barr wins gold at World University Games
Waterford student Thomas Barr has won a gold medal in the 400m hurdles at the World University Games in Korea.
The Ferrybank AC athlete, who will celebrate his 23rd birthday in a couple of weeks, secured the win by beating his own Irish senior record in the final.
His winning time of 48.78 smashed his previous Irish record of 48.90 which he set in Geneva last year. On Thursday he won his semi-final in 49.75.
A semi-finalists in the 400m hurdles at European championships in Zurich last year, Barr is studying mechanical engineering at the University of Limerick.
He is a younger brother of Olympian Jessie Barr.
Elsewhere at the Games, Kilkenny’s Ciara Everard finished sixth in her 800m final.
