PENN PALS UP TO ROLE
Sean flies in to film major new movie
HOLLYWOOD legend Sean Penn will jet to Dublin next month to start work on his latest movie here.
The double Oscar-winner has signed up to play a retired rock star in the drama, This Must Be the Place - and we can reveal the movie's attracting quite a starry cast.
Fargo star Frances McDormand will play Penn's wife in the big budget production, which starts filming here on August 16th.
Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has also joined the cast and will contribute to the movie's soundtrack, while several well-known Irish actors are also expected to be on board by the time the cameras start rolling.
In the movie, Penn will play a retired American rocker named Cheyenne who lives the quiet life in suburban Dublin with his wife. But when he discovers that his father has passed away, Penn's character discovers a secret his dad was struggling to uncover.
Holocaust
Going through his papers, Cheyenne finds that his father, a holocaust survivor, was obsessed with tracking down a Nazi war criminal he encountered many decades before and he takes on the task of completing his father's mission.
The movie will be shot in various locations around Dublin for three weeks before the production moves to the US.
It's the first English-language picture from acclaimed Italian director, Paolo Sorrentino.
"We're very excited to be involved with this movie. The script is fantastic and we have a great cast on board," said Ed Guiney of Element Pictures.
"It's great to be bringing what should be a very high-profile film to Ireland."
Penn is one of a small group of actors who have won two Oscars, for Milk and Mystic River and is very proud of his Irish roots on his mother's side.
He has visited on numerous occasions though this is his first time filming a big movie here.
The movie marks another boost for the Irish film industry in a week where sexy historical drama series Camelot also started shooting here.
The new TV series, which stars Bond girl Eva Green and Joseph Fiennes, will be filmed on location in Wicklow and Dublin over the
next 22 weeks and has already been snapped up by several international TV companies.

WHY IT'S FUNNY IN BRIAN'S HOUSE
CROONER Brian Kennedy reveals that being shacked up with outrageous Irish female comic Katherine Lynch is a laugh-a-minute.
The singer tells VHH that he never knows which of her characters he'll meet when she comes through the door at night.
Kennedy, who owns the Dublin house which the pair share, says: "Sometimes she arrives in from a photo shoot dressed as Bernie Walsh; other times it Sheila Sheik. There's never a dull moment when she's around."
Brian, who this weekend releases his Very Best of Brian Kennedy album, recently sang at Sky TV presenter Eamonn Holmes's wedding - the day after he played Glastonbury.
