Controversial Michael Conlan conqueror Vladimir Nikitin 'pulls out of Olympic semi-final'
The Russian news agency TASS has reported that Vladimir Nikitin, who controversially beat Ireland's Michael Conlan in the bantamweight quarter-final at the Rio Olympics, has been forced to pull out of the tournament due to injuries.
It emerged that last night that the three-time Russian champion, who previously beat Conlan at the 2013 World championships, was struggling to be fit for today's silver medal bout against 19-year-old American Shakur Stevenson due to facial injuries.
Nikitin went into the Conlan fight with a cuts to the left-side of his head and above his left eye which he picked up in his first bout in Rio.
Conlan's punches opened up the cuts again and the Russian required attention from the ringside doctor on two occasions during the fight.
There won't be official confirmation that the Russian has conceded a walk over until the boxers weigh-in before today's competition.
