Annalise Murphy is in the gold medal position more than half way through the Laser Radial class in the Olympic sailing regatta.

With six of the 11 scheduled races completed, the Dun Laoghaire sailor, who just missed out on a medal in London four years ago, finished fifth and second respectively in her two races today to take the overall lead.

However, it is very tight at the top of the rankings.

Murphy is one point ahead of Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom with the Netherlands in third place on net scores.

Each competitor is allowed to drop their worst finish when calculating their net score.

Tomorrow is a rest day and there are four races left before the all important medal race on Monday, in which the top-ten ranked sailors compete and which will decide the destination of the medals as there are double points available.

Meanwhile, in the Laser class Carlow's Finn Lunch finished 18th and 27th respectively in his two races today and is 24th overall. He also has a break tomorrow before resuming on Friday.
