A young man has tragically died in a workplace accident at a quarry in County Mayo.

An investigation is underway after the death, which occurred near Toreen, close to Knock, at approximately 10am.

Gardai confirmed the death of the man, who is believed to be in his 20s.

The Connaught Telegraph reported the man was operating a stone crusher when he was seriously injured.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the alarm was raised. They were, however, unfortunately unable to save him.

The Telegraph reports that the quarry is one of many owned by local businessman Frank Harrington Limited.

Gardai are still at the scene in Mayo and have closed off the quarry to enable an investigation.

The Health and Safety Authority have been notified and are sending personnel to the scene to investigate.

The man's remains have been removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for a post-mortem examination.
