Young girl critical after garden wall collapse

A six-year-old girl is critically ill in hospital after a 6ft garden wall collapsed on her, Essex Police said.

The child was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital in a life-threatening condition after sustaining a severe head injury following the incident in Fleetway, Basildon, on Sunday, a spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said.

Emergency services including the Hertfordshire Air Ambulance were called to the scene shortly before 7pm.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "The area has been cordoned off while inquiries into the circumstances of the incident take place.

"The Health and Safety Executive has been notified.

"Our officers are providing support to the girl's family at this difficult time."
