The young boy who was found unresponsive in a hotel swimming pool yesterday has sadly passed away, it has been confirmed.

Three-year-old Ronan Kennedy was left fighting for his life following the incident at the Quality Hotel at Redbarn, approximately 5km from Youghal.

He was discovered floating in the pool shortly before 2pm yesterday afternoon and was given emergency cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene.

Emergency services were called and the decision was made to airlift him to Cork University Hospital (CUH) by helicopter.

An Irish Coast Guard helicopter from Waterford landed nearby and Kennedy was flown to hospital accompanied by a local doctor.

At Cork University Hospital he underwent emergency treatment before it was decided to transfer him to Children's University Hospital at Temple Street in Dublin.

However, the boy sadly passed away earlier today.

He was holidaying in east Cork with his family, who are from Tipperary, at the time of the incident. He was due to celebrate his fourth birthday in September.

Gardai say they are investigating the scene but are treating the incident as a tragic incident.

It is believed the young boy had been playing with other youngsters when he was separated. It is believed he got into difficulty in the deeper section of the hotel pool.
