A three-year-old boy remains in critical condition this morning after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool in east Cork yesterday.

The young boy is fighting for his life following the incident at a swimming pool at the Quality Hotel at Redbarn, approximately 5km from Youghal.

Ronan Kennedy was discovered floating in the pool shortly before 2pm yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services were called before emergency cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was performed on the unconscious boy by a lifeguard. The decision was made to fly him by helicopter to Cork University Hospital CUH for emergency treatment.

An Irish Coast Guard helicopter from Waterford landed nearby and Kennedy was flown to hospital accompanied by a local doctor.

At Cork University Hospital he underwent emergency treatment before it was decided to transfer him to Children's University Hospital at Temple Street in Dublin. It is believed he remains in critical condition.

Kennedy was holidaying in east Cork with his family, who are from Tipperary, at the time of the incident.

Gardai say they are investigating the scene but are treating the incident as a tragic incident.
