A woman has been killed after getting out of her car on a motorway and being hit by an HGV.

Police said it is believed the woman, 24, was in a Ford Fiesta when she had a minor collision with the central reservation of the motorway, rendering the car unmovable.

When she got out of the car to check the damage, she was hit by the lorry. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have appealed for information about the accident, which happened at about 3.30am on Monday near junction five of the north-bound M61 motorway in Greater Manchester.

Officers are at the scene and there are likely to be delays for some time so motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Police Constable Paul Hailwood of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "I would like to extend my most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of this young woman.

"We currently have specially-trained officers working to provide them with any support they need at this tragic time.

"We are appealing for anybody with information to please come forward and contact police."
