A woman has been airlifted to hospital following a collision with a truck, gardai have said.

The woman was the sole occupant of a vehicle that collided with a truck just after midday. 

She was seriously injured in the collision which occurred on the N17, the main Galway to Sligo Road, at Claremorris. 

The woman, whose age is unknown at this time, was transferred to Galway University Hospital after the decision was made to call for an airlift. 

The truck driver was uninjured in the collision, gardai added. 

The road is currently closed in both directions pending a forensic collision examination of the scene and diversions are in place. 

It is expected that it will remain closed for a number of hours
