THE White House went into lockdown today after a fire outside the ground.

A food cart went on fire outside the grounds of the building in Washington DC. The fire prompted Secret Service agents to lock down the building shortly before US president Barack Obama was scheduled to leave for Selma at 10:30am local time.

Firefighters contained the blaze east of the North Lawn and the president left around 40 minutes later than planned.
