The Village Inn on Celbridge's main street has been damaged in an overnight fire.

The popular boozer, said to be on the site where Arthur Guinness first brewed beer, saw fire crews and gardai descend on it after the alarm was raised at around 3.30am this morning.

Gardai have confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the blaze is under way.

However reports say that there is no suggestion at this stage of any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.

Pictures from the scene show damage to the front of the premises.

The pub contains 'Arthur G's Stout Bar' as a tribute to the fact that in 1709 James Carberry’s Brewery was situated on that site and it was where Arthur Guinness first brewed beer.
