Weather warnings in place as gale force winds batter the nation

Met Eireann has issued two weather warning today for coastal areas.

A Status Orange warning is in place for Donegal, Galway and Mayo, with winds between 55 and 75 km/hr and gusts up to 100 km/hr expected.

Meanwhile a Status Yellow warning has been issued for Dublin, Wexford, Wicklow, Leitrim, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Waterford.

Winds between 45 and 55 km/hr and gusts up to 85 km/h are expected.

The Met office reports that:

This afternoon will be mild, windy and mainly dry with a good deal of cloud and some sunny intervals.

Patchy light rain or drizzle will develop on northwest coasts.

Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees with fresh to strong south to southwest winds, which will reach gale force along exposed west and northwest coasts.

While tonight will continue mild, windy and mainly dry.

Rain and drizzle in the northwest will extend over Connacht, west Ulster and west Munster overnight.

Lowest temperatures of 6 to 8 degrees with fresh to strong south to southwest winds, strongest along western coasts.
