Air Corps footage brings home the extent of the flooding facing some parts of the country in the wake of Storm Desmond. And worse may yet be on the way.

The footage, posted on RTE's Twitter feed, shows the vast swathes of water that have engulfed areas around Athlone.

The National Emergency Co-Ordination Centre says that over the next 36 hours the area from Limerick to Athlone may see even higher flood waters.

Water levels on the Shanon are still rising and the weekend sees a spring tide.

Add in additional rainfall forecast over the next few days and it adds up to a bleak few days for those in effected areas.

The Government has also agreed to create a €5million fund to help those affected by the floods.

The Cabinet also committed an extra €2m to provide more staff to Met Eireann and the OPW to help prepare better for weather events like Storm Desmond.
