Shocking footage of a man repeatedly punching a terrified pooch has sparked a manhunt for the vicious dog walker.

The violent assault on what is believed to be an American bulldog was recorded by a passer-by and handed over to the RSPCA – who later released the footage in a bid to trace the man seen hitting the dog.

The incident is believed to have taken place on Thursday December 10 at around 3:15 pm on Hendon Road in Nelson, Lancashire in the UK.

The RSPCA are now appealing for witnesses who may know the man or the whereabouts of the dog.

Speaking to the Telegraph, RSPCA Inspector Charlotte Booker said the dog was "clearly petrified" and that the animal welfare group was “"extremely concerned" for its welfare.

She said: "This is an urgent appeal to find the man in the footage, which we are releasing today, and the dog, whose welfare we are extremely concerned about.

"We hope that the images of him and the dog - a large white bull breed, we think probably an American bulldog - along with the location and time this happened will mean that those who know him will recognise him, and call us.

"This was a sustained attack on a dog which was clearly petrified and submissive and which had to be picked up and carried down the street afterwards."
