Two of the three people who were swept out to sea in Baltimore in West Cork earlier this evening have died.

The search is still on for a third person from the group, who were believed to have been rock fishing near the Beacon just outside the town at around 6pm.

A major rescue operation was launched after another member of the group called the emergency services when a female was swept into the water and the two men attempted to save her.

One of the men, aged in his 50s, and the woman, aged in her 20s, were taken from the water in a critical condition.

They were later pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.

Local divers, the Irish Coastguard and local boats have been scouring the area for the third person involved in the tragic incident.

Two of the people are reportedly from Baltimore and the third person from Cork city.
