Unbelievable picture shows child hanging off back of LUAS tram
A photo showing a youngster, 'scutting' on the back of a LUAS tram has surfaced on social media.
'Scutting' is the term given to the practice of hanging out of the back of a moving vehicle.
The picture shows the individual using a windcreen wiper, which has been bent backwards, for balance, as they precariously cling on to the rear of the tram.
LUAS can travel at speeds of up to 70k/h.
The issue was discussed on 98FM's Dublin Talks programme this morning, with one caller saying that he is a very frequent user of the LUAS and sees individuals scutting on a daily basis.
Transdev, the company tasked with operating the LUAS, confirmed to Independent.ie that the photograph in question is real, but say that scutting occurs "quite rarely".
"This is a very serious and potentially fatal practice that needs to be stamped out.
"The incident captured in the photograph was reported to gardai, and they have in turn spoken to the youngster's parents.
"We are doing all that we can to reduce scutting on trams, but ask the public to report any incidents that they may witness," Dervla Brophy, Transdev Communications manager said.
