UPDATE: Sligo knife attack upgraded to murder investigation

The preliminary results from the post mortem examination have been furnished and Gardaí can now confirm that Martin Kivlehan died of stab wounds.

A murder investigation has commenced.

59-year-old Mr Kivlehan was found shortly after 1pm yesterday when Gardaí were called to an apartment on Holborn Street in Sligo town.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last night a man in his late-20s and a woman in her mid-20s were arrested in the Sligo town area and are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Sligo Garda Station.

Mr Kivlehan, a former carpenter who lived alone, has been described as “the nicest fellow you could meet”, “a wonderful musician” and “a gentleman” by members of the community.  

Investigating Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses who may have been in the vacinity of Holborn Street between 10p.m. on Sunday night, 2nd August and 1p.m. on bank holiday Monday, 3rd August to contact the incident room at Sligo Garda Station 071 - 9157000, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station
