Reports are emerging that a Turkish prosecutor has been taken hostage at gunpoint at a courthouse in Istanbul.

An armed group of men burst in and took Mehmet Selim Kiraz hostage but it is not yet clear if anyone else is being held captive.

Kiraz is investigating the death of an anti-government protester who died one year ago after spending months in a coma after receiving injuries from police during protests in 2013.

The Dogan news agency has reported the gunshots have been heard emanating from the courthouse. There has been no reports of injuries yet, but there is a heavy police presence around the courthouse.

Some commentators are attributing the attack to a far-left radical group.
