Tributes have been paid to a schoolboy who died following a motorbike accident on the north coast

Daniel Sheridan (13), from the Friarstown area of Tallaght, Co Dublin, fell from his bike while practising motocross on coastal dunes outside Limavady on Thursday. He was flown to Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Co Derry for emergency treatment but tragically died yesterday.

The Sheridan family are well known in the Friarstown area, and compete at a high level in the sport of motocross.

It is understood Daniel was practising the sport with his brother Jake in Limavady when the tragedy happened.

His parents were yesterday travelling home from the North to be comforted by close family and friends.

Daniel's heartbroken brother Dean described him as "a kind and gentle young boy" who "wouldn't hurt a fly".

"I'll truly miss him - my hero, my everything, my world," he told the Irish Daily Mirror.

"He was something special, such a nice boy, a blessing of a brother."

Daniel was a pupil at St Killian's Senior School in Tallaght. The school's parents association yesterday extended its deepest sympathies to his family and friends. The school was due to open at midday today for those who would like to gather in remembrance.

Last night, Motorcycling Ireland Motocross extended its sympathies and "thoughts to the Sheridan family in this incredibly sad time".

A HM Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick and an Irish Coastguard chopper from Sligo attended the scene, as did the PSNI.

CPR was administered at the scene, but the seriousness of the boy's injuries meant he required urgent hospital treatment.

Sinn Fein Assembly member Caoimhe Archibald expressed her condolences.

The East Derry MLA said: "The community is in shock following the tragic death of a 13-year-old boy.

"My thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult and sad time."

A post on the Coleraine Coastguard Facebook page on Thursday said: “Coleraine Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked to prepare a landing site at Bellarena, following a report of a serious bike incident.

“The Coastguard Team assisted NIAS Paramedics and PSNI Officers, already on scene, with emergency first aid for a 13-year old boy.

“A landing site was prepared for the Irish Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 118 which airlifted the injured teenager to Altnagelvin Hospital.

“UK Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 999 was also tasked.”

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said: "Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council was notified yesterday afternoon of a serious accident involving a young person at a Motocross premises in Magilligan. Officers from the Council attended the scene immediately and investigations into the circumstances of the accident are ongoing."

The PSNI said they investigating a sudden death on behalf of the coroner in relation to an incident.
