Tragedy as 16-year-old dies in Irish soccer match

A 16-year-old soccer player collapsed and died on the field as he played for Belvedere's under-16 side on Sunday, the Dublin club have confirmed.

Belvedere officials have stated that the club is in "deep shock" at the appalling developments that will cause a wave of sadness across Irish sport.

The player has not be named until all family members have been contacted, with this statement being released by the club:

"Belvedere Football Club is mourning the death of one of our U16 players who tragically collapsed while playing for the club today.

"While all of our members are in deep shock, our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this tragic time.

"We ask that the privacy of the family be respected as the club supports them in grieving their boy. We won’t be releasing the player's name until all family members have been contacted.

"The club will also support our U16 players, coaches and parents who are devastated at the loss of a very popular team-mate."

This is the latest tragedy to hit soccer in recent months, with four professional players losing their lives on the field in the first few months of 2015.
