Top Garda's car nicked from outside his Dublin home
A senior Garda had his home broken into and his car stolen - while he slept upstairs.
According to a report in today's Irish Sun, Assistant Commissioner Derek Byrne's home in Castleknock was broken into via the kitchen window in the early hours of yesterday morning.
The raiders took the keys to a Volkswagen Golf and fled in the car. A second car at the home was not stolen as it is believed the thieves could not find the keys.
The car was recovered a few hours later by gardai on patrol in the Whitestown area.
The daring robbery came just hours after a major garda crackdown on organised crime saw a large number of vehicles confiscated in Dublin.
However, there is no suggestion that the Assistant Commissioner was targeted as there have been a number of similar incidents in the Castleknock area.
Byrne is responsible for leading the fight against many of the country's most feared criminals and just this week he launched a Crimestoppers initiative about stolen cars being sold online to unsuspecting members of the public.
