Facebook have released their annual Top 10 of the most discussed subjects this year and the Marriage Equality referendum topped the list.

Between the long campaign, the day of the vote on May 22 and the subsequent enactment and first marriages, the legalisation of same sex unions in Ireland was definitely the story of the year and that is reflected in Facebook's numbers too.

It tops the list of most discussed subjects in 2015 in Ireland.

The war in Syria and the ensuing refugee crisis was second on the list, while St Patrick's Day was third.

Other items of note on the list include the Paris Attacks last month (5), Steven Gerrard's move to LA (6) and the upcming Star wars film (8).

Facebook have also released a global topic list and the US Presidential election, which isn't even on until next year, lads the way.

Here is the global Top 10, with the Irish marriage equality referendum helping to get that global issue into the list.

Ed Sheeran was the most discussed entertainer, ahead of Taylor Swift and Kanye West while the Number 1 TV show was Game of Thrones.

The top movie was the upcoming Star Wars film and Floyd Mayweather was the most talked about sports star, one place ahead of the man he beat in the most hyped fight of the year, Manny Pacquiao.
