Tiger kills zookeeper in popular holiday resort town
A tiger attacked and fatally injured a female zookeeper at an animal park in Benidorm in Spain.
The incident took place in the Terra Natura at around 5pm last night as the 37-year-old worker was cleaning the enclosure.
Reports suggest she left a gate open by mistake, allowing a male tiger to launch the fatal attack.
Other staff at the zoo managed to knock the tiger out with tranquilizer darts but when emergency staff reached the woman she was already very badly wounded.
She was pronounced dead at the scene
A statement from the park is reported in the Sun.
"The entire staff of the park is appalled and deeply affected by the tragic news", the statement says.
“The accident occurred this afternoon about 17.00 p.m. in the shelter inside of the Asian Tigers, area where only has access the authorised personnel of the complex and that is not in view of the visitors.
“For reasons that are investigating, the caretaker has come into direct contact with the animal while cleaning jobs in the inner sanctuaries.
“Unfortunately, the paramedics have witnessed the death of the caregiver, who had been working for the park from eight years ago as a caretaker in cats and other species.”
