Three dead after car smashes into road sign

Three people are dead after a horrific road crash in Co Laois in the early hours of this morning.

A man (20) and two women (aged 20 and 35), who were passengers, were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a road sign at Middlemount, Rathdowney.

The three were pronounced dead at the scene and their remains have been removed to the mortuary at Portlaoise Hospital.

A third male passenger (16) was injured in the collision and he was taken to Tullamore General Hospital, where his injuries are described as non-life threatening.

The road remains closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators inspect the scene.
