Thousands of people have been left without power in the capital this evening after a power outage.

Over 5,000 homes and business in west Dublin were affected by the incident.

ESB said they have restored power to around 2,000 premises and are working on the restoring power to the remaining 3,400 or so.

The initial outage occurred shortly after 8pm this evening.

ESB apologised and said the power should be restored later tonight.

"We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible."

The cut has affected homes and businesses in parts of Lucan and Clondalkin in west Dublin.
