Tensions running high in Carrickfergus after crossbow seized from gang
Police in riot gear dispersed a large gang of men, some with hammers and one with a crossbow in Castlemara estate in Carrickfergus last night.
The Sunday World understands tensions are rising in the County Antrim town as warring loyalist factions face off against each other.
A 36-year-old man was arrested after a large group gathered, some armed with hammers.
Police also seized a crossbow during the incident.
Earlier in the evening, the Woodburn bonfire was set alight on purpose by a gang trying to incite trouble.
Superintendent Emma Bond said: "Reports suggested some of the males were masked and may have been armed with weapons such as hammers.
"Officers attended and dispersed the crowd seizing a number of items including a crossbow."
