'Technical error' sees 75,000 without welfare payments

The Department of Social Protection has launched an internal investigation after close to 75,000 social welfare recipients didn’t receive their disability or illness benefits today due to a technical glitch.

The payments should have been lodged into the bank accounts of 73,600 recipients this morning.

But a department spokeswoman confirmed that "a technical error in the department" resulted in none of the payments being lodged.

However, the department has promised that all payments will be in place by tomorrow while those who bank with Bank of Ireland and AIB should have received their payments this afternoon.

Customers with Ulster Bank and Permanent TSB had the option to access emergency cash if they presented at the bank with identification, the spokeswoman said.
