Teacher tragically killed on notorious N17
A young teacher was knocked down and killed as she walked home from a wedding celebration with her boyfriend.
24-year-old Tracy Melia from near Glenreavagh, Corrandulla, Co Galway, was hit and killed as she walked along the N17 in Claregalway, Galway at around 12.30am yesterday.
She had been celebrating the civil partnership of two friends at Peggy's bar in Claregalway.
Ms Melia suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her 24-year-old boyfriend was taken to University Hospital Galway where he is being treated for his injuries, which are not life-threatening.
The driver of the car, a local man, was uninjured.
The road was closed as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carried out an examination and diversions were put in place.

The section of road where the accident happened is regarded as a notorious blackspot by locals.
The young woman is survived by her parents Hugh and Patricia and younger sister Caitriona, who was abroad when the tragedy occurred.
Her parents are being comforted by friends and family at their Corrandulla home.
A post-mortem examination will be carried out on the young woman's remains today. The road remained closed until lunchtime yesterday to facilitate a Garda forensic examination.
