Suicide probe upgraded to murder investigation

A probe into the death of a 52-year-old man, who was originally believed to have taken his own life, has now been upgraded to a murder investigation.

John Stewart was found dead in his apartment on Dublin’s Clanbrassil Street last Friday with injuries which were initially believed to be self-inflicted.

Reports indicate that Mr Stewart’s apartment had been locked from the inside and that he had suffered from a mental health condition.

However, the multiple rib fractures were discovered during the post mortem, prompting gardai to upgrade the investigation.

A source told The Sun: “Initial indication suggested he may have died at his own hand.

“Sudden deaths unfortunately happen all the time in this city but further enquiries have found there is reason to believe this man may have been the victim of an assault.

Last night gardai were trawling through CCTV from the local area as Technical Bureau officers scoured the scene for clues.

Locals are also being quizzed about Mr Stewart’s movements.
