Status Yellow weather warning in effect
Met Eireann has issued a status Yellow weather warning, officially marking the start of the miserable season.
Today looks set to be cold and wet with heavy showers and hail predicted for some parts of the country.
Heavy showers will merge into longer spells of rain in Donegal, Mayo and Sligo.
Rainfall of up to 35mm is expected and the warning is in place until 9pm tonight.
For the rest of the country, today will be cold, breezy and showery, with some showers becoming more prolonged.
There is also a chance of thunder according to the national weather forecaster.
The Met Office has also issued two marine warnings, with a Status Yellow Gale warning and a Status Yellow small craft warning in effect.
Temperatures of between 6 and 9 degrees are expected.
Showers will continue into the night with an ongoing risk of hail and thunder and sleet on high ground, with temperatures of between 0 to 3 degrees.
AA Roadwatch have warned motorists to reduce their speed and "leave a safe braking distance from the vehicle in front of you".
