Gardai are seeking to identify a man who allegedly assaulted a six-year-old boy in the car park of a Lidl supermarket.

Officers have issued an appeal to the public for assistance in finding the suspect following the incident last Thursday. 

The young boy suffered injuries to his arm which required hospital treatment, authorities said. 

He was knocked to the ground by the man in broad daylight at the Lidl supermarket in Doughiska, a suburb in east Galway. 

Gardai said the incident occurred last Thursday, 29 October, at approximately 1.30pm but only came to light yesterday when gardai sought the assistance of the public in tracing the suspect. 

The man, described as having a grey beard, is believed to have left the scene in an Audi car. 

Officers believe he may be of Polish nationality.

"Investigations are ongoing and no arrests have been made to date," a spokesperson said.
