Sinead O'Connor has been found safe after going missing in the northern suburbs of Chicago, US.

The Irish singer (49) had been reported missing some hours ago and police had expressed concerns about her wellbeing.

A police spokesperson confirmed to independent.ie that Sinead O'Connor was found safe and well at 1.45pm local time (7.45pm).

Earlier today, police in Chicago launched an investigation when they were told the singer had not been seen since she went on a bicycle ride in the suburb of Wilmette yesterday morning.

US police sent out an alert as they began a search for the singer.

"O’Connor reportedly left the Wilmette area for a bicycle ride yesterday at 6:00 AM and has not returned," the local police department said in a statement.

"The Wilmette police is seeking to check the well-being of Sinead O’Connor.

"O’Connor reportedly left the Wilmette area for a bicycle ride yesterday at 6:00 AM and has not returned. A caller expressed concern for her well-being."

The police said that they did not know the singer's connection with Wilmette.
