Shocking footage has emerged of a police dog in the UK latching onto a restrained man's neck and head.

The short, wince-inducing clip was posted online on Monday and shows a shirtless man in Somerset being set upon by a vicious police dog.

Police are investigating the incident which occurred at the weekend in the early hours of Saturday, it is being reported.

Commenting on the video on YouTube, Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "We are looking into exactly what happened and whether the use of the dog was appropriate and necessary.

"If you were in the area at the time and witnessed the incident we would very much like to speak to you. Please call 101 and ask to speak to the professional standards department."

Since then, assistant chief constable Louisa Rolfe of Avon and Somerset Police has said: "We are aware of a YouTube clip and comments on social media channels about this incident.

"The incident has been referred to our professional standards department for thorough investigation as we are keen to understand what happened. The YouTube clip is only a few seconds long and doesn’t show events before or after the arrest.

"As this is a live investigation, it would be wrong to comment further.

"We are appealing for anyone who saw this incident to call our professional standards department via the 24-hour police enquiry centre on 101."

The man who was bitten has not been identified as of yet and it is not known how seriously he was injured.
