Fianna Fail TD Timmy Dooley was set upon by a protester outside Leinster House today as he returned from lunch with his wife.

The irate protester lunged at the newly elected Clare TD near Molesworth Street and grabbed his tie before trying to punch him.

Fellow Fianna Fail TD Billy Kelleher tried to intervene before he too was attacked by the protester.

Gardai where then forced to remove the protester from the scene.

Officers asked the Dáil deputies if they wished to make a statement on the incident.

A group of around 200 anti-water charge protesters have gathered outside Leinster House to demonstrate against the introduction of water charges this afternoon, on the first day of the new Dáil term.

Campaigners, who were supported by People Before Profit TDs Richard Boyd Barrett, Gino Kenny and Brid Smith chanted: "Labour, blueshirts, Fianna Fáil, sack, sack, sack them all."
