Two men were serious assaulted at a Luas stop in Tallaght last night, marring St Patrick Day celebrations in Dublin.

The victims, believed to be in their 30s, were attacked by a gang of youths at around 6.45pm, with one being knocked unconscious before they were both rushed to Tallaght Hospital for treatment.

Tallaght Luas stop was closed to all passengers for a time on the directive of An Garda Síochána, as a day of celebrations ended on a sour note.

The attack in Tallaght was the most notable low point on a national holiday that passed off with only a few minor incidents of public disorder, with a brawl among teenagers outside Dublin Castle one of the most unsavoury incidents of the day.

Meanwhile, in Belfast a 12-year-old girl was taken to hospital after she was struck with a bottle and a man in his 30s arrested as tension escalated in the city centre.
