A Russian military jet has been shot down over Turkey near the Syrian border, Russian news agencies have reported.

According to the reports, the Russian defence ministry said the plane was on a bombing mission in Syria and crashed after it came under artillery attack from the ground.

Moscow insists the Su-24 jet did not violate the Turkish airspace, but Turkey says it warned the aircraft several times before shooting it down.

Video footage of the incident has emerged, and it has been broadcast on CNN in Turkey.

It shows the jet being hit and the pilots ejecting well before the plane plummets to the ground in flames.

The Russian ministry said the pilots ejected but Moscow has had no further contact with them.

A Turkish military statement said the plane entered its airspace over the town of Yayladagi, in Hatay province. It said the plane was warned 10 times within the space of five minutes

Last month, Turkish jets shot down an unidentified drone that it said had violated Turkey's airspace.
