Having found a large quantity of smuggled cigarettes in a Dundalk house, further searches by Revenue officers revealed drugs with a street value of €83,000.

Revenue officers searched two houses in Dundalk on Thursday evening. 

Upon the initial search, officers uncovered 20,000 smuggled cigarettes branded "Excellence" along with 7kgs of "Flandria" tobacco.

The illegal tobacco products represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €11,000.

Gardai from Dundalk were called to the scene when further searching revealed herbal cannabis and cannabis resin.

The large quantity of drugs seized have an estimated combined street value of €83,000, with the value of the herbal cannabis estimated at €63,000 while the cannabis resin is thought to be worth around €20,000.   

No arrests were made and investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.
